Serving Others

Here are some excerpts from Dan Whisnant's('85) latest letter:
4 February 2007
Greetings from the Fallujah Peninsula,
This update must focus on the word 'others'. This is obviously not a new concept to most but it has been burned into my heart and soul over the past 4 months more than ever before. I clearly remember my parents, high school teachers and my youth pastor telling me how to serve others first. I have tried to teach my own children how others matter more than self and this concept is more real throughout the events that have transpired over these two tours in Iraq.
The marvelous Marines of Alpha Company 1/24 have experienced every emotion imaginable; they have encountered the utmost of danger; they have stared terror in the face. Throughout they have experienced unthinkable success in their mission all while continuing to steadfastly serve others - both Marine buddies and courageous, peace-seeking Iraqis.
Early on in this deployment I struggled to find something to focus myself on; some 'big event' or 'accomplishment' that we could point to as a group over the course of the 7 months in Iraq. Well, I wasted my time worrying and wondering what that would be. I didn't have to look any further than those around me who have stayed focused on serving those around them. So many times throughout a given day I've seen things happen but they didn't totally register until later. The utter magnitude of what these astonishing young men are accomplishing for others leaves me speechless sometimes.
As we continue to serve and think of others, let us always think, remember, pray for, and seek to serve those families of our fallen and injured warriors. The sacrifice they have paid is great and we must eternally give back to them our love, comfort, and gratitude.

Semper Fidelis,
